About us:

MEL was founded in 2023 by Yunan Wang and Jiaping Song with the joint aims of establishing a premier esports venue in Merseyside, creating opportunities for grass roots and professional esports players to compete, and to offer educational opportunities in esports to the local community.  In the same year, MEL entered into a joint venture arrangement with Tranmere Rovers Football Club to collaborate in achieving these aims, using the reach of a professional football club to engage audiences.

Merseyside Esports Limited Announce Winners of Digital Business Innovation Incubator

As Merseyside Esports Limited (MEL) continues to achieve steady progress across its core operations, the company is also committed to identifying new opportunities for growth through strategic engagement with emerging talent in the esports sector.

In line with this commitment, MEL is delighted to announce that three businesses have been selected for inclusion in the Company’s Digital and Esports Incubator. Each of the prize winners will receive a package of funding, premises, mentoring and partnership support worth almost £50,000.

The three selected businesses, which stood out from a strong field of applicants, are:

1. ExerPlay

an innovative electronic game interface designed to allow people with restricted mobility to play computer games, whilst assisting with their rehabilitation. The product is expected to be of particular benefit to people affected by stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions which may have compromised motor skills. The user can customise their device to their unique needs, without having to purchase costly additions.

Founder Craig Ryan said “Video game therapy has demonstrated potential in slowing the progression of neurodegenerative effects associated with age-related diseases while positively impacting mental health. By making gaming more accessible and functional for the elderly, we can help alleviate the demands on the care industry. With the support of the incubator, ExerPlay will collaborate with research institutions and care facilities to further develop our product and demonstrate its cost-effectiveness in addressing rising care costs”.

2. KeyKats KatKeys -

a manufacturer of artisan and infinitely customisable computer key caps using a patented photopolymer 3D printing method. This business will enable a new level of customisation in a billion dollar market, by allowing the creation of extremely fine detailed models in 3D format, making it ideal for licensed brands, sports teams, and individual enthusiasts to build bespoke keyboards.

Founder Steven McKerrow said “I am proud to be joining forces with TRFC and MEL; their backing, exceptional insight and pedigree in team sports will:

a. significantly enhance the Keycaps product and brand. Our (My) goal of making the technology and product accessible to consumers and brands alike will no longer be a dream. It's a purrfect platform to help brands make meaningful and memorable products for gamers and esports.

b. give our creative solution the purrfect platform. I look forward to developing the brand and IP with the team at TRFC and MEL. This will make Artisan Keycaps far more accessible in the market with a cute and Cat twist, we can't wait to open this up and see what everyone creates”.

3. MonoSim/FlatOutSimulations – a new racing simulation experience that allows the customer to experience the thrill of driving a high-performance supercar at various locations around the world and to compete in esports events that offer a perfectly level playing field and closely matched opponents, on demand, with daily tournaments and global leaderboards. The founder’s experience in the professional simulation space along with an innovative new simulation engine will allow MonoSim to deliver an industry-leading racing experience to a consumer market.

Founder David Hatton, said “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Merseyside Esports Limited and the comprehensive package of support offered by the MEL Incubator is a game-changer - helping us to not only bring this exciting new esports product to market but also strengthening our joint commitment to create innovative and immersive experiences for the gaming community. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in our journey into the consumer space and we’re excited about the path ahead together with Merseyside Esports Limited”.

Jiaping Song, a director of Merseyside Esports said: “We would like to thank all of the entrepreneurs who entered this competition for inclusion in our Incubator programme, and to congratulate the three who have been selected. We look forward to working closely with each of them — not only to help realise the vision they have for their own businesses, but also to explore new opportunities for growth together as we expand the scope of MEL’s esports and digital innovation initiatives.”

Merseyside Esports Limited’s Digital Business Innovation Incubator

Merseyside Esports Limited (MEL), a joint venture company owned by League Two English football club Tranmere Rovers and external investors, has launched a new business incubator.

The Digital Business Innovation Incubator is ‘designed to transform entrepreneurial dreams into real success stories’ and is now inviting applications for support.

It provides a package of financial aid, professional guidance and collaborative opportunities, and aims to provide a support system to help early-stage business ventures succeed in the fields of digital technology, virtual reality, app development, gaming and esports.

‘We are providing a salary for the entrepreneur for a year, to enable them to focus full time on making their vision a reality. In return for the financial support, MEL will take a small equity stake in the supported businesses, ensuring that our interests in their success are aligned.’

It’s the latest programme following the similar British Esports’ Esports Accelerator Programme last year.

“We are going one step further by providing a salary for the entrepreneur for a year, to enable them to focus full time on making their vision a reality. In return for the financial support, MEL will take a small equity stake in the supported businesses, ensuring that our interests in their success are aligned.”

Whether you’re a visionary game or app developer, an innovator in virtual reality, or even an esports team with a pathway to profitability, this incubator is your opportunity to bring your vision to life’.

Merseysider eyes ePremier League glory - Sports News

Tranmere’s first ever professional eSports player has his eyes set on ePremier League glory following a positive start to the season. Owen “Larney” Laugharne has qualified for the pro ladder of FC25 with a 23-12 record, as he looks to build on his already growing reputation in the community.

Larney signed with Tranmere as their first FIFA player in June this year after winning a knockout tournament at Prenton Park. He beat well known pro Ragnar in the final to secure his spot as Rovers’ pro player. Prior to this, he had represented himself at two LAN tournaments with mixed results including a second place at the NSPCC Cup in Nottingham in May.

The pro ladder is the first main event of the 2025 season, 156 players qualify before the competition reaches its climax in a showpiece in London in February. The next phase begins on Saturday as the competition turns to a Swiss format.

Qualifying for the ladder was huge to Owen, he said “getting into it (the ladder) was a massive achievement for myself, it opens so many more doors for me and will reduce the amount of qualifiers I have to play in future tournaments”.

Larney finished 147th, good enough to make the cut for the ladder. He had a shaky start to the week before turning things around and dragging himself up the table. “The start to the week was less than convincing I can’t lie. To then go on and win my last 14 out of 15 games against seasoned pro’s was very clutch from myself and something I can be proud of”.

Larney told Merseysport Live: “I want to become the ePremier League champion. I’ve been working at this for a couple of years now and truly believe that this could be my year. All I’ve got to do is back myself”. Larney almost qualified last year to represent Crystal Palace but was knocked out in the final online round after a dramatic second leg collapse.

He’s a big fan of fellow pro Emre Yilmaz. “I base my gameplay a lot from Emre, I enjoy watching his games to see if there’s any tweaks I could make to my own game.”

Larney can only dream of having the cool head of Yilmaz’s cool head admitting he’s struggled with nerves in past tournaments. “Emre always remains calm even if he goes a couple of goals down, something I’ve been working hard to implement into my games”.
